Florence and The Machine. Nuestro primer concierto Melbouriano. Mil gracias a Adam y Vanessa que nos han invitado a semejante conciertazo. La cita a las 10pm. Me sorprende que sea tan tarde; esta ciudad lleva un horario bastante adelantado, aunque puede que sea yo y la falta de costumbre de salir y trasnochar. El cambio de década me ha traído esto.

Lugar: Palace Theatre, una sala de conciertos con cierto aire a la joy eslava de Madrid. Cuando entramos ya está bastante petado, pero encontramos un magnífico sofá en la primera planta. El sofá nos sirve tanto para llevar la espera, como para subirnos y tener buenas vistas del escenario. Sorprendentemente nadie nos llama la atención.

Los aplausos y gritos nos alertan del comienzo. De repente, una espectacular pelirroja con un vestido bien sexy hace su entrada en el escenario. Su voz y sus movimientos se apoderan de la sala. Tema tras tema se va ganando a su público que, pausadamente, se mueve al ritmo de sus canciones. En el transcurso de una hora y media los ingleses dan muestra de su talento y agradecen varias veces el excelente público ahí presente. Es entonces cuando me doy cuenta que estoy en Melbourne, porque perfectamente podría haberse tratado de mi tierra natal. ¿Seremos realmente diferentes o son frases hechas para hacer sentir especial a sus fans? Yo lo veo un poco como lo último. Aun así lo disfruté mucho en la compañía de Richard, Adam y Vanessa. Gracias chicos.

Vosotros sí que sois especiales

Florence and The Machine. Our first gig in Melbourne. Big thanks to Adam and Vanessa for such a great concert. Its all started at 10pm, which surprised me because its quite late and this city follows an earlier routine, but maybe its just me and the lack of parting and latenights of late. The new era brought me this.

Location: The Palace Theatre, a venue quite similar to Joy Eslava in Madrid. When we arrived it was already quite crowded but we managed found a great spot on the first floor with a sofa right next to us. Which not only gave us something to climb on when it began but also as a resting place before it all started. Surprisingly no one says a things when we get up.

The applauds and shouts advice us about that things are about to start. Suddenly, a spectacular flame haired girl dressed in a sexy dress arrives on stage. Her voice and movements tranfixs us all in to the night. Hit by hit she is controls the crowd who, moves in rythum to the tunes. Over an hour and a half, the english rose shows her talent and gives thanks many times to the ever keen spectators in her awe. This i when i realise i am in Melbourne, because it could easily be back in my native land. Are we really so different or are just the words spoken to make the fans feel more intergrated? I reckon it’s the last point. Altough in saying that, i enjoyed it more with the company of Richard, Adam and Vanessa.

La versatilidad de los locales de esta ciudad me tiene loca. El domingo, después de un caluroso paseo por el centro, nuestro cuerpo nos pedía un premio por el esfuerzo realizado. Dada la proximidad, entramos en un edificio en cuya última planta hay una terraza con césped artificial, hamacas y vistas espectaculares de la ciudad. Como el ascensor tarda una eternidad nos hacemos los atléticos y optamos por las escaleras. En la primera planta hay un bar con estética bohemia-vanguardista en el que ya estuvimos hace un par de meses. Cookie. Muy recomendable. En la segunda encontramos otro bar con música un poco más fiestera… no es el momento… Seguimos subiendo y nos topamos con una librería increíble. Parada obligatoria para inspeccionar y ojear el material de diseño y fotografía que tienen. Quisiera poder hacerme con unos cuantos ejemplares!! Pero debo contenerme… En el portal de al lado hay una tienda de ropa bastante alternativa. Seguimos subiendo… restaurante chino… subimos… parece una vivienda… y llegamos a la sexta y última planta. Entramos en lo que parece ser una agencia de diseño. Una flecha indica que para ir al rooftop debemos subir por unas escaleras de incendio exteriores a lo neyorkino y… voila!! Allí que nos encontramos.
Tras hacernos con un hueco en la sombra y disponer de una refrescante sidra, nos encontramos tan a gusto que empezamos a restregar nuestros pies en la hierba… Estamos rodeados de rascacielos y tenemos la ciudad a nuestros pies. El dj está pinchando y hay un cielo azul. Me dispongo a averiguar la temática del bar. Tienen una pantalla en la que proyectan películas de martes a domingo. Para este mes la cartelera consiste en: Zoolander, Casablanca, Ghost, Lost in Translation, Footlose, Taxi Driver y muchas más. Me encantan las posibilidades de esta ciudad…

The versatility of the locals in this city drives me crazy. On Sunday, after a hot walk through the cbd, our body deserved a reward for its efforts. Due to the proximity, we entered a building which has a terrace on the top floor complete with artificial grass, deck chairs and spectacular views of the city. The lift was taking a while so, being as we were already pumped like atletics, we opted to take the stairs. The Cookie Bar is on the first floor with a bohemian-avant guard feel in which we were a couple of months ago, highly recommended. On the second, another funky bar for the more party goer… not at the moment! We continued up and found an incredible bookstore. It was a compulsory stop to have browse at the design and photography material on display. I wish i could have brought more than several issues… but i must control myself! In the door adjesent there is an alternative clothing store but we keep on moving… next a chinese restaurant… still we go up and pass an apartment… until finally we reach the sixth and last floor. We are in what seems to be a design agency with an arrow that indicates the rooftop is just a short climb of the emergency fire stairs, how very new york and… voila!! here we are.
After finding a place in the shade, with a refreshing cider in our hands, we kick off our shoes to rub our feet on the grass. We are surrounded by skycrapers and have the city at our feet. The dj plays summer fresh tunes under a clear blue sky. I set about to find out just what the bar offered and find that they have a outdoor screen where they play movies every Tuesday to Sunday. For this month the films are: Zoolander, Casablanca, Ghost, Lost in Translation, Footlose, Taxi Driver with plenty more to come. I love the possibilities of this city…

Cerveza y playa, dos elementos fundamentales en el estilo de vida Australiano que, cuando se juntan, crean una experiencia aún mejor. Ya llevamos cuatro meses en Melbourne y hemos tenido una barbaridad de cambios con el tiempo. Debido a su ubicación global se puede pasar de un extremo a otro en cuestión de horas; de ahí viene su nombre de ¨cuatro estaciones en un día. Así que, aunque vivimos tan cerca de la playa, todavía no hemos pasado tanto tiempo en ella como me imaginada que haríamos, dada la accesibilidad que tenemos. No es decir que hasta ahora no haya hecho calor, solo que no hemos tenido un fin de semana de chicharra que nos incitara a bajar a la playa con todo nuestro equipo y además con los datos heladores del agua de Port Philip. Sin embargo ahora estamos en el mes más cálido del año y hemos tenido una racha de días con 30º. Con el bochorno de hoy ha llegado el momento inevitable de ir a la playa. Si tienes coche tienes muchas opciones; para surfear lo mejor es irte fuera de la ciudad, pero nosotros no tenemos esos lujos y además, nuestras intenciones son poner en práctica cómo ser los auténticos domingueros.

Melbourne está ubicado en un extremo de la bahía Port Philip y cuenta con muchas playas en su costa. La más cercana está en el barrio de St Kilda, que no está mal, pero esa zona está plagada de mochileros y la oportunidad de encontrar un sitio es más limitada. Un poco más abajo está el tranquilo suburbio de Elwood con su propia playa que atrae más a los locales. Cuenta también con el beneficio de tener las aguas con poca profundidad por lo que se calientan enseguida cuando hace calor.

A los australianos les encanta la vida al aire libre y no se tarda en notar con sus playas llenas de gente de lo más variopinta; nadando, en motos de agua, kayaks, windsurfing, body boards etc. El mar también estaba plagado de medusas (por lo que nos dijeron no venenosas) cuya presencia no desanimó a los bañistas que a veces se les oía decir ¨empújalas se si te acercan, tío¨ mmm.

Como he dicho, en este país hay un amor por la cerveza y no hay mejor manera para disfrutarla que con amigos, así que es bastante común ver a un grupo con un ¨esky¨ (congelador) lleno de birras y hielo (es un sacrilegio no servir las cervezas super frías y no hay ninguna excusa) para disfrutarlas al sol. El ¨Stubbie Holder¨ es la invención de Australia; básicamente es una funda para la cerveza para que no se caliente cuando la tienes en la mano, brutal! Por lo cual, las aguas con poca profundidad tienen su ventaja ya que puedes estar cubierto hasta la cintura a la vez que saboreas una cerveza, siempre y cuando no tengas demasiado miedo a las medusas.

Hoy me he enterado que hace uno de los peores inviernos en Europa y mientras nosotros hemos estado tomando el sol, bebiendo una birra del estado de Victoria e interrumpiendo esto solo para bañarnos de vez en cuando. Yo me podría acostumbrar de este tipo de vida… y más que nada en Enero!

Beer and the beach, two things that are fundamental in the Aussie life style and when put together create the ultimate experience. Since living in Melbourne for the past four months we have had a variety of changes in the weather, due to its global position it can experience the extreme of them all and some times within a matter of hours, for this it know as the city of four seasons in one day. So although we now live so close to the beach we have not yet spent the amount of time down there that i imagined we would with it being so accessible. That´s not to say that it has not been hot so far, just that we have not yet had a sweltering weekend which obliged us to make 20 min trip down with all our gear, besides previous tests of the port Philip water had proven just too cold. However now we are officially in the hottest month of the year and we have a streak of days well into the 30´s so it was high time we changed all that starting with the scorcher today. The choices are endless here with a car and if you are after the surf then you need to head out of the city to find some of the best, but for us we are a little more limited and the main interest is to practice being a good old fashioned beach bum!

Melbourne is at the very top a large bay though of which there are numerous beachs to be found along its coast. The closest and most popular to us would be St Kilda which although is not bad it is slap bang next to backpacker central and chances of finding a spot can be tricky. So a little further down the road is the leafy suburb of Elwood that has its own strip of beach which pulls in a more local crowd and has very shallow water for the first 10 metres or so meaning that it can be warmed up in intense heat as we found out.

The Aussies love the outdoors and is not hard to notice with the water being a mix of swimmers, jetskies, kayaks, wind surfing, body boards etc. The waters were also full of some other action in the form of a few jelly fish that we were assured were non dangerous which could only be backed up by no one being the least discouraged by their presence, “just push them away mate” was over heard from a few people hmmmmm. There is also a love for beer down under and there is no better way to enjoy it than with friends so its not rare to see a group with an ¨Esky¨ (Portable Cooler) in tow filled up beer with ice (it is a sacrilege not to serve a beer ice cold here and there is no excuse) which are passed around to enjoy a cold one in the sun. This must have been the source of a classic and unique Australian invention, The Stubbie holder. This is basically a sleeve that the beer is slipped in to avoid the warming while in your hand, legend eh! Hence those shallow waters prove great for wading in up to your waist with beer in hand to suck on, just as long as you are not to squeamish about the jellies!

So today as i look to see one of the coldest fronts in Europe for years we have been laying in the sun sipping back on the Victorian states very own beer with casual trips to drink to cool down every now and then. I could get very used to this way of living and especially in January!
